Little dark one
Etymology & Historical Origin - Kiera
Kiera is another anglicized form of the Irish female name Ciara (generally pronounced the same way). Ciara comes from the Irish Gaelic “Ciarán” meaning ‘little dark one’. The male version of the name (Ciarán) has been in use for over 1,500 years! In ancient and medieval times Ciarán/Ciara would have been chosen for babies with dark features. One notable Irish bearer of this name, Saint Ciar, was an Irish nun who lived in the 7th century noted for the establishment of a monastery at Kilkeary. The original Irish spelling Ciara was ranked #15 in Ireland (2010), but England, Wales, Scotland, Australia and Canada (like the United States) seem to opt for the anglicized versions of Keira or Kiera.
Popularity of the Name Kiera
Kiera is a pretty new entrant onto the American female naming charts, first appearing in 1988. Keira and Kiara are the much more popular spelling variants of this name; although, ironically, the original Irish Ciara is among the least used. Go figure. Kiera has managed to climb the charts to very modest popularity at once making her familiar but underused. Keira Knightley (note: spelled with the “e” before the “i”) has helped to popularize this old Irish classic in an anglicized sort of way. To avoid confusion later in life (if that’s a concern of yours), we’d recommend the original Ciara (especially if the parents are Irish-Americans) or the most popular spelling of Keira. Whatever spelling you prefer, Kiera and her sisters are definitely pretty sounding names with undeniable Irish charm.
