Etymology & Historical Origin - Knox

The name Knox comes from a Scottish and English surname originating from a topographical feature. It comes from an Olde English word “cnocc” which signified a ‘round hill’ and the surname would have developed to indicate a person who dwelled on a hilltop. As a surname, Knox dates back to the 13th century and first appeared in Scotland but was also common in northern England. One of the more famous name bearers was the 16th century Calvinist John Knox who was an outspoken critic against the Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots. Knox went on to lead the Scottish Reformation which reshaped the Church of Scotland and Presbyterian churches worldwide. As a forename, Knox has mainly been used in the United States and dates back to the 19th century.

Popularity of the Name Knox

Knox appeared briefly on the U.S. male naming charts in the late 19th century but was by no means used commonly. Knox as a forename would completely disappear from the charts during the entire 20th century. Abruptly, the name reemerged in 2009. You won’t be surprised to learn that it was a certain celebrity couple responsible for putting this one-syllable name back on the map. Yup, that was Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt who named their son Knox Leon in July 2008. This single-handedly had a major impact on the resurgence of Knox’s popularity. Just another shining example of the influences of pop culture in the United States. But there are several other interesting reasons to like this name. First, its Scottish origin gives the name charm and its ‘top of the hill’ etymology furnishes the name with a commanding quality. Secondly, Knox Overstreet was a character in the 1989 coming-of-age film, “Dead Poets Society”. This character gave the name a prep school erudite quality. Lastly, let’s not forget that Fort Knox is where the majority of U.S. gold is kept – indeed a precious commodity. We also like the nickname “Knoxy” (although be careful of “noxious” associations). All in all, Knox holds a pocket-size punch and is not yet overused. We like that it’s a One in numerology – a success and leadership number – suggesting that your little Knox will indeed be the one looking down at the rest of us “from the hilltop”!
