Etymology & Historical Origin - Krish
Krish is an Indian masculine name, short for Krishna in reference to Lord Krishna who is considered by many Hindus to be the Supreme God. In Sanskrit, Krishna or Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) means “black, dark” but also carries other connotations such as “all attractive” and “mysterious”. As one of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu who was sent to earth circa 3000 B.C., Krishna is perhaps the most humanlike of all the deities. His life is fully accounted for, from his celebrated birth to his earthly departure around the age of 125. In the years in between, Krishna personifies what it means to be human – from our greatest dreams and aspirations to our very real limitations and weaknesses. Krishna is everything all rolled up into one: an impish little boy, a brave fighter, a defeater of evil, lord of the cow-herders, a flute-player, a lover of the ladies, and an all-wise incarnation of God. Krishna is the driving force behind the Bhagavadgita, or simply the Gita (“Song of the Lord”). The Gita is a seminal religious text in Hinduism and acts as a spiritual reference guide on how to follow the right paths of spiritual identity, action, knowledge and faith. The Gita details Lord Krishna’s dialogue regarding dharma (Hindu moral law) during his conversation with Prince Arjuna who, having reached a moral dilemma over the Kurukshetra battle killings, seeks the wisdom of the great deity. Lord Krishna delivers his famous “action without attachment” advice: “One who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering the results unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected by sinful action, as the lotus is untouched by water.” (Bhagavadgita 5.10). Lord Krishna is credited with influencing every aspect of Hindu life, culture, intellect, art, philosophy and religion. He is much beloved and celebrated, and for good reason!
Popularity of the Name Krish
Krishna is a Top 10 name in India. The name Krish, however, only just appeared on the American male naming charts in 2006. Considering the name’s usage is generally restricted to Hindus, the fact that it debuted at position #633 on the charts (out of 1000) is actually quite remarkable. We’re not sure, but 2006 also happened to be the year a blockbuster Indian film was released called “Krrish” (a sci-fi superhero movie). This may have had an influence on the name’s sudden usage in the United States. Also, after 2006, the name has since diminished in popularity and is actually on a downward trend today. It’s a super cool name for anyone who appreciates the Hindu faith – a way of life that is experienced rather than defined. And Lord Krishna embodies the many complex principles that are fundamental to Hinduism.
