Etymology & Historical Origin - Kymani

Ky-Mani is an East African name which means “adventurous traveler”. It also happens to be a name that iconic reggae artist Bob Marley gave to one of his sons. Although Ky-Mani Marley was born in Jamaica he relocated to Miami, Florida as a young boy. Eventually he made a name for himself as a musician in his own right and brought attention to his unique name. Reggae fans in America took notice of this unique name and started bestowing it on their sons with enough frequency to make the masculine naming charts in the United States. Although we’re not sure if American parents are adding the hyphen to Ky-Mani or simply spelling it Kymani.

Popularity of the Name Kymani

We’re pretty certain it was Ky-Mani Marley’s reggae/hip-hop album “Radio” that influenced the sudden usage of his name in the United States. In October of 2007 “Radio” topped the Billboard Reggae Charts at #1 and then the name Kymani/Ky-Mani abruptly appeared on the U.S. naming charts in 2008. Coincidence? We don’t think so. Although Ky-Mani has grown from complete obscurity to mild familiarity, it’s mainly restricted to hard core reggae fans or African-Americans appreciative of the name’s East African roots. Although the name is unusual, the meaning (“adventurous traveler”) is one of the coolest we’ve seen to-date.
