Characteristics of Lauryn
Etymology & Historical Origin - Lauryn
Lauryn is a modern (mainly American) respelling of Lauren. The name Lauren is a short form of the French name Laurence which was originally derived from Latin. The Latin Laurentius essentially means "someone from Laurentum.” Laurentum was an ancient Roman city in the Latium region southwest of Rome, and some Roman historians considered it as the first capital of the Latins. As such, Laurentius was a common Roman given name during the classical era, and the name has persisted for millennia through the Middle Ages and into modern times in many forms (Laurence, Lawrence, Lorenz, etc). The name of the ancient city of Laurentum may have been derived from the Latin word “laurus” which means “laurel” (a symbol of wisdom and accomplishment). The female “Lauren” however is a pretty recent mutation of the original name, and probably most popularized by a young Jewish girl from New York, Betty Joan Perske, who would later change her name to Lauren Bacall in the early 1940’s. Lauryn emerged as a minor mutation of Lauren in the late 1980s.
Popularity of the Name Lauryn
Lauryn only first appeared on the female naming charts in 1987. The name was obviously influenced by the popularity of Lauren. By exchanging the “e” for a “y” parents were probably trying to put their own unique stamp on this heavily used name. In fact, in 1987, Lauren was the 16th most popular girl’s name in America. Lauryn rode on her more traditional sister’s coattails for a while, but then saw a tremendous boost up the charts between 1996 and 1999 – a whopping 650 positions in four short years! This was a remarkable improvement and almost completely influenced by pop-culture. 1996 was the year Lauryn Hill entered the music scene as a member of the Fugees – she hit stardom and her career would continue to take off (and so would the spelling of her name!). As we’ve crossed the threshold into the 21st century, the spelling of Lauryn isn’t faring as well today (even Lauren is on an overall decline). About 88% of the baby girls receiving this name today are getting the traditional spelling of Lauren; only about 12% spell it Lauryn.
