Characteristics of Leighton
Etymology & Historical Origin - Leighton
Leighton is the transferred use of an English and Scottish surname derived from a place name. There are several villages in England and Scotland so-called Leighton, Leaton and Laytoun; all towns originated from the Olde English “leac” meaning “leek” plus “tūn” meaning “town, farm”. Therefore the name Leighton basically means “leek farm” (leeks are vegetables belonging to the same family as garlic and onion). The first recorded spelling of the Leighton surname appeared in the early 13th century rendered as “de Lecton”. A couple Leightons in the early 14th century were knighted by the King of England suggesting leek farmers did alright in medieval England. As a given name Leighton is relatively modern and, for the most part, considered gender-neutral. However, the only countries that appear to be using it are the United States and Canada.
Popularity of the Name Leighton
Leighton has a longer history as a boy’s name in America; the name appeared sporadically on the masculine charts in the late 1800s and occasionally in the 1900s. As a girl’s name, Leighton appeared on the charts for the first time ever in 2009 (obviously in reaction to the success of actress Leighton Meester of “Gossip Girl” fame). As a female name, Leighton debuted high on the charts at position #674 right off the bat and has already climbed to levels of mild moderation. For boys, the name reappeared in 2010 but resides near the bottom of the Top 1000 list. Most people think of Leighton as a girl’s name now, but surnames generally come across as unisex sounding so this one is up for grabs.
