Etymology & Historical Origin - Lexi

Lexi is one of the many pet forms that developed from the female name Alexandra (such as Alexis, Alexa, Alex and Lexie). Alexandra in turn is the female variant of the name Alexander which is the Latin form of the Greek name “Alexandros”. The name’s meaning is interpreted from the Greek “alexein” which means “to defend” plus “andros” which translates to “man, warrior” in a relationship or possessive form. Hence the meaning: ‘defender of men or mankind’. Alexander the Great was King of Macedon in the 4th century B.C.; you’d have a difficult time finding a military general more legendary than this man. Even though Alexander is an ancient name, the English speaking counties did not adopt the Latinate female Alexandra until the late 19th century when it was introduced by the Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans where the name was already in wide use. The name Lexie or Lexi did not develop into a independently given name until the end of the 20th century even though it had been in use as a nickname prior to that.

Popularity of the Name Lexi

The name Lexi first appeared on the U.S. naming charts for little girls in 1993. Even though Lexie was in sporadic use prior to Lexi on the charts, Lexi is the far more favorite spelling. Lexi has done quite well on the charts. In less than 20 years, the name has advanced more than 700 positions up the charts. It hasn’t made the Top 200 list yet, but it still seems to be showing forward momentum. They like this name in Idaho in particular; it’s ranked 73rd in our Potato State. Lexi is a happy, upbeat name. Like Alexis, Lexi is a “pretty girl’s name” but with a tomboy edge. Of course, she’ll probably hear “Sexy Lexi” most of her life, that’s not exactly an insult. The name is more modern and hip than Alexandra but not as pretentious as Alexis. Lexi has spunk and sexiness all rolled into one.
