Etymology & Historical Origin - Leyla

Leyla is a variant spelling of Leila and used primarily among Turks, Azerbaijanis and other ethnicities around the South Caucasus region. Leyla is an Arabic female name from “Leila/Layla” meaning “night, nocturnal” (ليلى). Arabs would often bestow this name on their daughters in the convention of describing the quality or character of the baby; as such it has come to mean “dark beauty” or “one who was born at night.” Leila, Leyla, and various other spellings have been in use since the Middle Ages, sometimes inspired by the true Arabian legend of “Qays and Layla” – a story of unrequited love. According to the story, two young virgins (Qays and Layla) fall truly, madly, deeply in love; so much so they were barely able to privately contain their affection. This caused quite the scandal in their community, and so Quys and Layla were eventually forbidden to see each other. Distraught and desperately love-sick, Qays fled the tribe, wandered in the wilderness chanting love poems about his darling Layla, and eventually descended into madness before finally succumbing to death. Originally an Arab/Muslim name, Leila (and its variants such as Layla and Leyla) has acquired currency in both the English-speaking world and the Nordic nations in particular. Eric Clapton had a lot to do with this thanks to his famous song “Layla” (inspired by the same Arabian tale). It’s an absolutely gorgeous name no matter how you decide to spell it.

Popularity of the Name Leyla

The Leyla spelling has only been around since 2005. The sudden appearance of this particular spelling (as well as all the others) can be attributed to the growing popularity of Layla. Today Layla is a Top 50 baby girl’s name nationwide. A stand-out name like this was almost begging to be respelled (American parents are most notorious for their compulsion to respell). The thing that’s tricky with Arabic names is that there are always several possible transcriptions of the name since our languages and alphabets are so dissimilar. All of these various spellings are perfectly reasonable. However, most people are likely going to spell the name Layla (the most common spelling in the United States). Leyla is currently the least favored. It really just comes down to preference.

Leyla: The Black Tulip (Alev Lytle Croutier) - From the "Girls of Many Lands" series. Istanbul, 1720. How could this elegant girl possibly be me, the girl who had run wild in the Caucasus not so long ago? This girl in the looking glass resembled a Princess! With a grateful smile, I looked around at all the girls, all of whom also looked magnificent. Surely the Padishah would be pleased with such a harem! Life in the Topkapi Palace harem follows its own rules and rhythms, and twelve-year-old newcomer Leyla has much to learn about this hidden world of women. When she reveals her skills as a gardener, Leyla is assigned to work with the Mistress of the Flowers. In the harem gardens, Leyla secretly plants the tulip bulbs she brought from her home in the Caucasus Mountains - a reminder of the life she's left behind.
