Etymology & Historical Origin - Luz
Luz is the Spanish word for “light”. The name is primarily used in reference to Nuestra Señora de la Luz which is another Spanish title for the Blessed Mother (i.e., Our Lady of the Light). Several female Spanish names are derived from the many bynames attributed to the Virgin Mary, for example: Our Lady of Mercedes (mercies), Soledad (solitude), Dolores (sorrows), as well as important place names associated with Mary such as Guadalupe, Lourdes, Fatima and Montserrat. Luz is another Spanish female name in celebration of Jesús’ mother, a woman particularly venerated in the Spanish and Latin-American cultures. Currently the name appears to be most heavily used among Hispanic-Americans in the United States but it remains a relatively uncommon name.
Popularity of the Name Luz
Although Luz is not particularly popular in the United States when compared to other Spanish girl names, she is holding a position on the charts nonetheless. The name first appeared on the American female naming charts in the late 1800s, although her usage would be sporadic and rare until the 1950s. At this point, Luz finally managed to secure herself more firmly onto the charts. The name grew over time and reached her peak popularity in the 1970s; although the highest point on the charts she ever achieved was #455 in 1972. In other words, Luz is pretty uncommon. It’s a name with religious meaning and usually bestowed with a nod of respect to the Virgin Mary. As a one syllable, three-letter name, Luz is short and sweet. Minimalistic, yet “bright” and friendly. In fact, we’d say this one is quite beautiful in her simplicity.
