Etymology & Historical Origin - Lyric

Lyric is derived from an English vocabulary word which means ‘songlike, poetic’ and originated from the Greek word “lyrikos” (λυρικος) also connected to the ancient stringed instrument the lyre (a song sung on the lyre). Lyrics are basically poetic words put to music and therefore an artistic expression of feelings, thoughts and emotions. As a personal name, Lyric developed as a girl’s name in the United States at the end of the 20th century. It has since become a unisex name; although it’s given to more females than males.

Popularity of the Name Lyric

As mentioned above, Lyric began as a female name used almost exclusively in the United States starting in 1995. As with names like Harmony, Melody and Cadence, Lyric is a name inspired by music-loving parents. For girls, the name has climbed to mildly moderate levels of usage. The name appeared on the American male naming charts in 2005 but is much more rarely used on little boys. Lyric is currently three times more popular for baby girls. It seems that people have strong and differing opinions on this name in terms of its unisex nature. Some say that it sounds very masculine and Lyrica would be a better alternative for females; others maintain that Lyric sounds definitively feminine. Either way, this “word” name is still obscure enough and very original as a personal name that anything goes at this point. The actor Gary Dourdan who played Warrick Brown on CSI: Las Vegas named his son Lyric, while former basketball player Kenny Anderson used this name for his daughter.
