Etymology & Historical Origin - Mackenzie

Mackenzie is the transferred use of a distinguished Scottish clan name which originated from the older Gaelic "MacCoinnich" (son of Coinneach, or son of the “bright one”). Coinneach is an Old Scottish-Gaelic personal name meaning "comely, good-looking.” Even though the Mackenzie clan has been playing bagpipes and wearing kilts in Scotland for over 700 years, usage of Mackenzie as a forename is relatively recent (late 20th century). Although this one would be considered gender-neutral, it’s much more popular for baby girls. Original usage of the name was influenced by the then teenaged actress Mackenzie Phillips (b. Laura Mackenzie Phillips) who rose to stardom in 1976 on the popular sitcom “One Day at a Time” (1975-1984). However, the name really caught on around the turn of the 21st century (2001) when names like Mckinley, Mckayla and Mckenna came into vogue. In England, Mackenzie is more popular for baby boys, but it’s a Top 100 baby girl’s name in Canada, Australia and the United States.

Popularity of the Name Mackenzie

Mackenzie is definitely a modern-day American favorite. The name first appeared on the U.S. female naming charts in 1976 at position #838 (influenced by the actress Mackenzie Phillips, daughter of musician John Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas). Despite Mackenzie Phillips notorious drug problems, her unusual Scottish surname-turned-first-name caught on with a vengeance. It only took the name 20 years to reach Top 100 status in the United States. Its highest point on the charts was achieved in 2001 at position #40; however, her heyday appears to be behind her. Like Madison, Mackenzie may have become too popular too quick. Its ϋber-trendiness is clearly wearing off (although she remains a Top 100 favorite nationwide). Mackenzie also has a history of usage among baby boys since the mid-1980’s, but with such low frequency it hardly registers. Cute, trendy and sweet, Mackenzie is a darling modern name choice.
