Etymology & Historical Origin - Madisyn

Madisyn is an Americanized respelling of the ever-popular female name Madison. Madison comes from the transferred use of an English surname. The surname is derived from maternal ancestors and comes from the medieval female given name “Madde” which was a short form of Maud. Maud, in turn, is a colloquial form of Matilda (Latin) from the Germanic words “maht” (might) and “hild” (battle). Madison was taken up as a given name (for boys) in America apparently influenced by the 4th U.S. President, James Madison, who was one of the country’s Founding Fathers. It could also be considered a place name when referring to Madison, Wisconsin. Today, Madison (and her altered spellings like Madisyn) is exclusively female. As the name Madison became so popular in the United States, other English-speaking nations adopted this trendy name (it’s a Top 50 favorite in Canada, England, Australia and Northern Ireland). As often happens in America, when a name becomes ultra-trendy, reinvented spellings begin to emerge. They are Maddison, Madisyn and Madyson (in order of current popularity).

Popularity of the Name Madisyn

The respelling of Madisyn first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1997. In the past 15 or so years, the name has mainly increased in usage. Today, Madisyn is the third most popular spelling for this name. Madison is by far the most popular, followed by Maddison (although Madisyn is in neck and neck competition with Maddison for second place). Still, 82% of the baby girls born today who receive this moniker have it spelled the traditional way (Madison). About 6% of the girls get Madisyn. The particularly unique spelling of Madisyn is ranked on the Top 100 list in Mississippi, but nationwide, it is only used semi-moderately (about 1000 baby girls a year). Whereas Madison is given to about 13,000 baby girls per year! The “Madison” family of names is so ϋber-trendy and dangerously overused that many Americans consider this name the poster child for “sheep” mentality. Nonetheless, this ‘mighty battler’ persists in popularity and has dug her stubborn little heels into the female naming charts. Madison and her respelled sisters have become a modern day favorite.
