Etymology & Historical Origin - Mateo

Mateo is the Spanish version of the English male name Matthew from the Hebrew “Mattathia” which translates to “Gift of God.” Matthew is best known as the Christian evangelist who wrote the first gospel of the New Testament. As an important figure in the Christian Bible, the name Matthew and its many variations have been used widely throughout the English and Spanish (Mateo) speaking worlds. We know Matthew has been in use since the Middle Ages, so Mateo must also be several centuries old. The names of the four gospel authors have always been important and widely used among those of Spanish descent (Mateo, Marcos, Lucas and Juan). Mateo is currently the 35th most popular boy’s name in Mexico (2010) and 44th in Spain (2009). Interestingly, the Italian version of Matthew, Matteo, is the 4th most popular boy’s name in Italy (2008).

Popularity of the Name Mateo

We are not sure why, but this centuries-old name only first appeared on the U.S. naming charts quite recently in 1995. We would have thought it’s been around longer than that! In any case, Mateo has increased in usage rather quickly in the past 15 years. In 2011, the name reached its peak popularity at position #191 on the charts. In New Mexico, the name Mateo is already on the Top 100 list, but this doesn’t surprise us given the density of the Latino population in that border-state. Mateo is a masculine and strong-sounding boy’s name. Your baby is presumably your gift from God, so what better to name him than Mateo?

Children's Books on the Baby Name Mateo

Recommended for ages 3-7.

Jornadas de Mateo: Cuentos para Ninos de Todas las Edades (Alejandro Lorenzo) - It's difficult to figure out where this little oddity fits. Billed as "Tales for Children of All Ages," the slightly cynical, completely Zenlike take on human nature seems aimed at the older end of that spectrum. Mateo appears in four different incarnations, variously as the object of discrimination, the recipient of undeserved acclaim, a wise man ignored, and a compassionate teacher. If the stories are a little heavy-handed in their messages (people hate what is different, have a hard time accepting their lot in life, prefer dreams to reality, and may react with violence if disappointed), the lovely language, both in the Spanish original and in the beautifully rendered English translation, does much to compensate Recommended for ages 9-12.

Los Colores De Mateo (Marisa Lopez Soria) - No information on this book is currently available. Recommended for ages 7-10.

Mateo y la grua de medianoche (Allen Morgan) - No information on this book is currently available. Recommended for ages 4-8.

Mateo y los pavos de medianoche (Allen Morgan) - During a nighttime adventure Mateo is besieged by silly turkeys and constructs a turkey trap to capture them--or was it just a dream? Recommended for ages 4-8.

Raton Mateo Y Su Hermana Maggie (Lorenzo Liberto) - Spanish edition. Matt the Rat and his sister Maggie discover their grandfather’s old wooden chest, and they unleash all of its magic when they find out that the chest allows them to be anything they can imagine: a firefighter, a marine biologist, a soccer player, a news reporter, and more. This book is part of La Serie de Ratón Mateo that also includes the books Raton Mateo Se Defiende and Cuando Yo Crezca. Recommended for ages 4-8.
