Characteristics of Meadow
Etymology & Historical Origin - Meadow
Meadow is the English vocabulary word describing a grassy field used primarily for the production of hay (fields where livestock graze are typically referred to as pastures). Meadows are either naturally occurring or they are artificially created for agricultural purposes via the removal of woodlands. The word “meadow” comes from the Olde English “mædwe” meaning “a mown field” from the root element “me-“ meaning “to mow, cut down” – mainly because meadows in England were mowed annually for hay production. When most of us think of a meadow we picture a flat field with abundant wildflowers – some place peaceful and beautiful. As a female given name Meadow came to the forefront during the 1960s counterculture movement when names like Rainbow, Summer, Sky and Echo became fashionable among the hippie crowd. Meadow would also be considered a “nature” name along with flowers, trees and plants. Rivers, brooks, savannahs and meadows – these are all nature-inspired features of our landscapes that bring us sense of connectivity. As a female given name Meadow is used primarily in North America and Australia.
Popularity of the Name Meadow
Although Meadow was probably in circulation as a girl’s name in America during the 1960s and 70s, it wasn’t common enough to make the Top 1000 list. That didn’t happen until 2001. And it wasn’t a revival of the hippie era that brought Meadow to the charts. Nope. Ironically it was the HBO drama series “The Sopranos” (1999-2007) that we can thank for reintroducing us to this nature-loving name. Played by Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Meadow Soprano is a smart, attractive, rebellious and slightly troubled teenager who understands all too clearly what it is her gangster father does for a living. We wonder if the creators of the show were being intentionally ironic by selecting such a serenely peaceful name for the daughter of a mob-boss. Still, Meadow was a name suddenly brought into millions of households and enough fans of the show named their own daughters Meadow with enough frequency to land the name on the charts for the first time ever in 2001. Meadow is still a low ranking name and hardly given to 300 baby girls per year, but "hay", at least she’s on the charts.
