Etymology & Historical Origin - Mia

Mia is a diminutive of Maria (used primarily among Scandinavians, Germans and the Dutch). Maria, of course, is another form of Mary. All of the Mary/Maria names find their original source in the Hebrew Miriam, believed to be derived from the Egyptian element “mry” meaning “beloved”. This would make sense since Miriam of the Bible (Moses sister) was born into slavery in Egypt. However, the importance of the names Mary/Maria is owed to the New Testament rather than Miriam of Exodus – i.e., Mary being the blessed, virginal mother of Jesus. In the early Middle Ages the names derived from Mary (Marie, Maria, etc.) were considered too holy for use. By the High Middle Ages this restrictive societal naming norm loosened up and Mary became one of the most successful female names of all time. Mia developed as a Northern European diminutive of Maria; however, she is also sometimes considered a diminutive of Amelia (a name with an altogether different etymology). Finally, Mia is the Italian word for “my, mine” as in “la mia bambina” (my baby girl).

Popularity of the Name Mia

Mia’s initial success as a baby girls name in the United States was owing to actress Mia Farrow (born Maria de Lourdes). Mia made her debut on America’s Top 1000 list of female names in 1964 and by her second year she was already the 266th favorite baby girl’s name nationwide. That type of rapid popularity is not often seen without some pop-culture influence (in this case, the delicately pretty Ms. Farrow). It looked as if the name might reverse her course in the 1970s and 80s, but then claimed a wider audience in the 1990s. As we turned into the 21st century, Mia finally claimed Top 100 status (2000) and she continues to climb the charts all the way to the top. Mia became a Top 10 baby girls name in 2009 and today she’s ranked #8 in the country (2012). Not only has Mia experienced great success here in the United States, she is also a name of choice all over English-speaking nations: England, Scotland, Ireland, and especially down-under in Australia. Short, easy to say and easy to spell, Mia packs a lot of punch in that small three-lettered frame of hers (maybe it’s her Italian energy). A downright darling name for any “beloved” baby girl – and one which ages nicely into adulthood. Two resounding thumbs up for Mama's Mia!
