Etymology & Historical Origin - Miah

This is a tricky one. Miah appears to be a modern coinage first appearing in Australia during the 1990s. Appropriately, the name purportedly comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “moon”. We have not been able to verify this assertion; however, mainly because there are hundreds of Aboriginal cultures across Australia (each with their own language and/or dialects). Not to mention many of these languages are now extinct. Here are some of the actual words we found to mean “moon” in a few Aboriginal languages: kunyul (Nyulnyulan); wīta (Tasmanian); gakgalak (Wagiman); t̯apařa (Tiwi) and partangarra (Warlpiri). Do any of these words even remotely appear linked to Miah? We don’t think so. Furthermore, in ancient Aboriginal astronomy, the moon was widely personified as a MALE figure, not female. We believe the notion that Miah means “moon” in “Aboriginal” is nothing more than folk etymology (unless someone can prove us wrong). Rather, it is our opinion that Miah is a made-up spelling, either another version of Maia (Greek), Miya (Japanese) or Mia (Latin); and is therefore either pronounced MY-ah or ME-ah depending on the preference. Please refer to these other name pages for more detailed information. It should also be mentioned that Miah has historically been used as a nickname for Jeremiah.

Popularity of the Name Miah

Miah reared her lovely head on the American popularity charts for the first time in 2001. As far as Americans are concerned, this one is a 21st century coinage – very new and very modern. Miah is not a particularly popular name, but she is growing in usage. This is likely influenced by the far-reaching success of Mia (currently a Top 10 favorite nationwide); as well as the popularity of Maya (ranked 64th in 2011). Miah, Miya, Mya – these are all similar sounding names depending on how you choose to pronounce it. In terms of the name’s meaning, it depends more how you spell it. Maia is the typical spelling of a Greek goddess whose name means “good mother”; Miya is the typical transcription of a Japanese word meaning “great beauty” and Mia is Italian for “mine” or the Dutch, German and Scandinavian diminutive of Maria (which ultimately comes from the Hebrew Miriam probably meaning “beloved”). No matter how you pronounce it or what etymology you assign it, Miah is a lovely name.
