Characteristics of Michaela
Etymology & Historical Origin - Michaela
Michaela is the German female form of the masculine given name Michael (the English have traditionally used Michelle). The name Michael originated from the Hebrew word “mikha'el” which actually translates into a question: “Who is like God?” It seems odd to have a first name that basically asks a question; however, the question is considered rhetorical. The implied answer is clear: no one is like God. Therefore, the translation of the name Michael is often one of humility. Michael was one of the archangels who stood close to God and carried out His judgments. He was also a protector of the ancient Hebrews. Michael was the chief leader of the angels who fought and defeated the dragon (i.e., the devil), hurling him from heaven. As such, he became of symbol of the Church Militant and a patron saint of soldiers. The name Michael conveys a sense of power, bravery and strength by its translated meaning; but also a symbol of humility expressed very simply by that question mark. Michaela became highly fashionable in Germany, Switzerland and Austria in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and so it eventually spread to English-speaking countries. However, recently in the United States, the name Michaela has been a little abused. First of all, the traditional German pronunciation is four syllables (mi-khah-E-lah), but in America people have a tendency to pronounce it with three syllables (mi-KAY-la). This is normal since different languages have different sound interpretations. What’s troublesome is that parents in the United States have come up with several “Americanized” spelling variations such as Makayla, Mckayla, and Mikayla. So if you’re a fan of this German mid-century classic, you need to know it’s been twisted and shaped into many cutesy American forms. Some people are bothered by this; you may not be one of them.
Popularity of the Name Michaela
Michaela first appeared on the U.S. popularity charts in 1967 but it would take at least a decade for the name to stick to the charts successfully. By the 1980s, the name was clearly on the upswing. The height of Michaela’s popularity was during the 1990s. It seems that the name was clearly influenced by the central character on a highly-rated TV drama called “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” (starring Jane Seymour as Dr. Michaela “Mike” Quinn). The show aired from 1993-1998 which mimics the most popular years of Michaela’s usage as a female first name. In fact, in 1997 (for one brief year) Michaela was on the Top 100 list of most commonly used girl names. As we crossed the threshold into the 21st century, Michaela has lost her footing. She is being replaced by the more cutesy modern American renderings of her once elegant name (Mikayla, Makayla, etc). If you’re a traditionalist and like the feminine Michael name idea, we say go back to Michelle.
