Etymology & Historical Origin - Milagros

Milagros is the Spanish word for “miracles”. As a female personal name, Milagros is used in reference to “Our Lady of Miracles” (Nuestra Señora de los Milagros), one of the many titles given to the adored Virgin Mother in Spanish tradition. The cult of Mary is incredibly important in Spanish Catholic culture and has given birth to several female names in celebration of Our Mother. Just consider some of the following examples: Our Lady of the Light (Luz), Our Lady of Mercies (Mercedes), Our Lady of Solitude (Marisol, Soledad), Our Lady of Sorrows (Dolores), Our Lady of the Altar of Heaven (Araceli), Our Lady of the Conception (Concepción), Immaculate Heart of Mary (Corazón), Star of Mary (Estrella), Our Lady of Peace (Paz), Our Lady of the Pillar (Pilar) and Our Lady of the Rosary (Rosario). Not to mention location names where Mary’s apparition appeared and have since become places of pilgrimage: Guadalupe (Mexico City), Carmen (Mt. Carmel, Israel), Fatima (Portugal), Lourdes (France) and Monserrat (Catalonia). Basically, Milagros is another Spanish female name that celebrates the Mother of Jesus among Catholic Hispanics worldwide. As mentioned above, Milagros means “miracles” and is used in a similar fashion as English speaker’s usage of the name Miracle for their baby daughters. This is another “virtue” name from a Christian perspective because the belief in miracles is a huge ingredient in the overall Catholic narrative. They love this name in Argentina where it’s a Top 10 favorite choice for baby hijas.

Popularity of the Name Milagros

Milagros is a super cool sounding name, and one with depth of meaning, but because it’s so ethnically Spanish it hasn’t seen dramatic usage in the United States. First appearing on the American female naming charts in 1952, Milagros saw very low success and would eventually disappeared from the charts completely in 1971. Ironically, this is right around the time that the Hispanic-American population was soaring in the United States. So what happened to Milagros? The name recently reappeared in 2008 but still doesn’t get much play on the charts. Perhaps for the American naming styles the “-gros” suffix is just too masculine. Milagros is a Number Four in numerology which is the number we can always count on. Can we always count on Milagros? Let’s hope so. We need a few of those in modern-day America. Don’t you agree?

Milagros: Girl from Away (Meg Medina) - Milagros de le Torre hasn’t had an easy life: ever since her father sailed away with pirates she’s been teased at school and there’s the constant struggle for her family to make ends meet. Still, Milagros loves her small island in the Caribbean, and she finds comfort in those who recognize her special gifts. But everything changes when marauders destroy Milagros’s island and with it, most of the inhabitants. Milagros manages to escape in a rowboat where she drifts out to sea with no direction, save for the mysterious manta rays that guide her to land. In stunning prose, Meg Medina creates a fantastical world in which a young girl uncovers the true meaning of family, the significance of identity, and, most important, the power of a mother’s love. Recommended for ages 10-14.
