Etymology & Historical Origin - Miya

Miya is a Japanese name which, like many Japanese names and their corresponding kanji, may be interpreted to have several different meanings. We have found Miya represented a few different ways: みや and 宮 and 美哉 with one of two different potential meanings. The kanji 宮 represents a temple, palace or shrine (and pronounced ME-ya). Miya is also represented as 美哉 with 美 meaning “beautiful” and 哉 meaning “alas!” or “what!”. So Miya is usually interpreted to mean “extreme beauty” (alas! What beauty!). There remains pronunciation confusion with this name, however. In the United States some parents pronounce the name MY-ah (Mya) while others opt for ME-ah (Mia). Either way, both meanings and both pronunciations are lovely. Take your pick.

Popularity of the Name Miya

Miya made her first appearance on the U.S. Top 1000 list of female names in 1999. This pretty little name of Japanese origin was most likely influenced by a bevy of other similar sounding names: Mia, Maya, Mya, Maia, Miah and Myah. Yet Miya does stand apart from these others with her own particular Asian flavor. All the different potential spellings, meanings and pronunciations do add some confusion which may create a nuisance for the name bearer (i.e., always having to correct people). But it may be a burden worth enduring for such a lovely little moniker.

To Miya it's the best place in the entire world, and she knows how lucky she is to have it. So when her home is threatened Miya doesn't just sit around sulking. She's the princess of Clover Island, with the blood of pirate legends running through her veins, and she'll do whatever it takes to protect her kingdom.
