Etymology & Historical Origin - Nyla

Nyla is a name that appears to be most common among African-Americans in the United States. Our assumption is that Nyla is an Americanized spelling variation of the Arabic female name Nā’ila (from the male Nā’il) meaning ‘winner, attainment of desires’. Given the appealing etymology of this name, it’s no wonder that people outside the Arabic world have since embraced it.

Popularity of the Name Nyla

Nyla secured a momentary position on the American female naming charts in 1941 but for that year only. The next time Nyla would reappear on the charts in the United States was in 2001. So far this century, Nyla is doing pretty well. In less than 10 years this pretty, simple name has ascended to levels of mild moderation. There are many Muslim and Arabic names that have influenced the naming trends within the African-American community and Nyla is one example of this. Nyla has a lovely sound and a super strong, no-nonsense meaning – winner!
