Etymology & Historical Origin - Oceanus

Oceanus is the Latin form of the Greek Ōkeanós (Ωκεανος) which was the name of a Titan god in Greek mythology who personified the endless river that surrounded the earth (which is how the ancient Greeks perceived the waters around them). Okeanos was the eldest son of Uranus (god of the sky) and Gaia (goddess of the earth); he was often depicted as a bearded man whose lower body was that of a sea serpent. He was also the husband of Tethys, a sea goddess, and through her the father of the 3000 Oceanids, daughters who presided over all bodies of water in the ancient world. It is from this ancient Greek god where we get our English word “ocean” – the five large bodies of salt water which form the boundaries of the continental land masses (i.e., the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic). Oceanus is not a common given name. In fact, it’s rarely, if ever, used.

Popularity of the Name Oceanus

Oceanus is a historically important name to Americans, and we’re about to tell you why. During the arduous two-month voyage of the Mayflower ship from Plymouth, England to Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1620, there was a baby born aboard to Stephen and Elizabeth Hopkins. Apropos, they named him Oceanus Hopkins. All we have to say is this: it must have been a rough birth on those rough seas! Sadly, little Oceanus died before the age of seven. Still, we absolutely love this little piece of American history. In fact, 63 baby boys were named Ocean in 2012.
