Etymology & Historical Origin - Paisley

The word Paisley is derived from a Scottish town located in the west-central area of the Lowlands and situated very close to the major city of Glasgow. Paisley first became prominent through the establishment of chapels and churches by Irish monks as far back as the 7th century. It became a major religious center by the 13th century and is known for the Paisley Abbey. Weaving became the town’s principal industry by the 19th century which resulted in Paisley giving its name to the “Paisley pattern” (a twisted-teardrop, kidney-shaped pattern that actually originated in the Middle East). There are a few theories on Paisley’s etymological origins. It is most likely derived from the ancient Celtic Brythonic word “passeleg” meaning ‘basilica, major church’. This would make sense given the town’s religious origins. Paisley could also be derived from an Olde English personal name Pæssa (unknown origin) combined with “leāh” (‘wood clearing’). Paisley became a female given name only in the 21st century in the United States and likely inspired by the country-music heartthrob Brad Paisley.

Popularity of the Name Paisley

Paisley first appeared on the U.S. naming charts for girls in 2006, so the name barely has five years under her belt. It follows the “Last Names First” trend along with American parent’s insatiable appetite for newly coined names (particularly for girls). Paisley reminds us of Riley, Bailey, Hadley, Marley, Kelsey and Presley. These names are practically interchangeable for your little girls or for your new little puppy. Regardless of what we think, Paisley is on the rise. It has gained almost 600 positions on the charts since making its debut a few short years ago. We doubt that it will go much further than a Top 200 spot. This name has too much competition with so many other surnames. It’s a cute name but probably a fleeting fad. Although many U.S. states would probably disagree with us. It’s currently the 29th most popular girl’s name in Utah and ranked 43rd in Oklahoma. It is also on the Top 100 lists of favorite girl names in Wyoming, Idaho, Arkansas and West Virginia.
