Etymology & Historical Origin - Pepper

From the Genus “Piper,” pepper is a climbing plant whose unripen and ripened berries are dried and grounded into a pungent seasoning. From the Genus “Capsicum”, pepper is a hollow green, red, purple or yellow edible fruit containing removable seeds (with milder pungency). Finally, “to pepper” is a colloquial transitive verb meaning to bombard, to scatter and/or to enliven something or someone. Pepper also developed into an English surname derived from an occupational name; to identify a person who held the position of a pepperer or spicer (a servant in a manor or large estate, perhaps, or one who worked at an eatery). In any case, Pepper is not technically considered a given name (it has more often been used as a nickname).

Popularity of the Name Pepper

Remarkably, Pepper has actually appeared once on the U.S. female naming charts (i.e., Top 1000 list). That happened in 1975. One random year, and that’s all. We just knew there was some pop-culture influence behind this development and we were determined to find it. After much research, we finally did. At the end of 1974, a new television drama series debuted starring Angie Dickenson as the titular “Policewoman” (1974-1975). Her character’s name was Sgt. “Pepper” Anderson, and TV viewers responded to it in high enough numbers to place the name on America’s Top 1000 list for the first and only time ever (1975). The feminist movement was sweeping the country, and Dickenson’s performance hit a nerve (“Policewoman” was the first primetime drama series to feature a woman in a starring role). Pepper is no longer on anyone’s radar, but the name is still given to over 100 baby girls born per year. We like the feisty, spicy nature of this name. It is a bit informal and nicknamey – but it’s super cute. It's as "peppy" as Pepper!
