Etymology & Historical Origin - Raina
Raina is a transcription of the Bulgarian form of Regina (Райна) which comes from the Latin meaning “queen”. You can see the stark similarities against the Spanish word for “queen”: Reina. The words “queen” and “regina” developed from two different language families: Germanic (English) vs. Italic (Latin). “Regina” is the female equivalent to “Rex” (Latin for king). These are both rooted in the Latin “regere” (which means “to rule”). On the other hand, the word “queen” comes from the Germanic branch, derived from the Olde English "cwēn, cwene" which was a common early medieval word for “woman”. Raina could also be a feminized formation of “rain” which describes water droplets falling from the sky (the Olde English “regn” is derived from a Germanic word meaning the same, which may have ultimately been influenced by the Latin “rigare” meaning “to wet, moisten”).
