Etymology & Historical Origin - Ramiro

Ramiro is an old name that dates back to at least the early Middle Ages. It’s the Spanish form of the Latin “Ramirus” which was borrowed from the Visigoths in ancient times (remember, it was the Visigoths who famously sacked Rome in 410 A.D.). As a result of the presence of these Germanic tribes in southern Europe and on the Iberian Peninsula (Visigoths, Vikings, Vandals, etc), several names of Germanic origin can be found in these regions. Ramiro in particular is derived from the Germanic components “ragin” meaning “advice” and “māri” meaning “famous”. The name was borne by several medieval Kings of León (present day Portugal) and Aragon on the northeastern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. For opera appreciators out there, Prince Ramiro is the hero of Italian composer Gioachino Rossini’s 1817 opera “La Cenerentola” (Cinderella). You know, the one who gets the girl in the end.

Popularity of the Name Ramiro

While not popular today, Ramiro has successfully held a position on the American male naming charts since 1925. This by itself is quite an accomplishment. However, Ramiro has never been a particular favorite and has only been used modestly at best. It was most popular around the 1970s and 80s likely spurred on by the growing Hispanic-American population. Today the name has diminished to low levels of usage. It’s not a name you hear too often making it an original choice by today’s standards. The name has enjoyed little (if any) cross-over appeal outside of the Spanish-speaking population, and even they seem to the ignoring this ancient moniker. Ramiro Peña and Ramiro Mendoza are two well-known baseball players providing the name with a little athletic currency. If more parents don’t rediscover this name, Ramiro is in danger of disappearing from the charts altogether, after a long nearly 100 year ride.
