Etymology & Historical Origin - Renee

Renée is the French form of the Late Latin Renata (masculine: Renatus) meaning “reborn”. Such given names were used by early Christians in celebration of Jesus’ resurrection or in reference to spiritual rebirth through baptism. Renée’s popularity continued through the Middle Ages, particularly in France, and used readily on either gender (René being the masculine form). English-speakers would ultimately borrow Renee from the French (dropping the accent mark over the second “e”). Renee saw a revival in popularity during the 20th century, but has since fallen from fashion in the 21st century.

Popularity of the Name Renee

Americans have been naming their little girls Renee since the beginning of the 20th century. At first the name didn’t do so well but by the 1940s it became apparent that Renee was headed for the Top 100 list – an honor she finally achieved in 1959 and would hold for 20 years (until 1979). Renee’s best decade was during the 1960s when the name got as high as #62 on the charts (1967). Things started to reverse course for Renee in the 80s and 90s but it really wasn’t until we crossed the threshold into this new century that Renee really got left behind. Her drops on the charts have become more pronounced in the past several years and now this name resides near the bottom of the list. Gender-neutral and très français, Renee is still a lovely name even if her fashionable days are behind her. It’s also a great middle name since it flows so effortlessly with almost any other female name.

Your Name Is Renée (Stacy Cretzmeyer) - Subtitled: Ruth Kapp Hartz's Story as a Hidden Child in Nazi-Occupied France. In Nazi-occupied France in 1941, four-year-old Ruth Kapp learns that it is dangerous to use her own name. "Remember," her older cousin Jeannette warns her, "your name is Renee and you are French!" A deeply personal book, this true story recounts the chilling experiences of a young Jewish girl during the Holocaust. The Kapp family flees one home after another, helped by simple, ordinary people from the French countryside who risk their lives to protect them. Eventually the family is forced to separate, and young Ruth survives the war in an orphanage where she is not allowed to see or even mention her parents. Without the trappings of lofty language or the faceless perspective of history, this first-person account poignantly recreates the terror of war seen through the eyes of an innocent child. Your Name Is Renee is a tale of suffering and redemption, fear and hope, which is bound to stir even the most hardened heart. Recommended for ages 10-14.
