Etymology & Historical Origin - Roselyn

Roselyn is a name with two possible etymologies. The first, and most obvious, is the simple combination of Rose and Lynn. The second etymology suggests that Roselyn is ultimately derived from Rosalind (by way of Rosaline and Rosalyn). The name Rosalind was brought to England by way of the Norman-French after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The French adapted the name from the ancient Germanic Roslindis, from the Old High German elements “hros” meaning “horse” and “lindi” meaning “soft, mild, tender, gentle”. Rosalind is a name loaded with literary cachet thanks to William Shakespeare’s comedy “As You Like It (c. 1600) which features a memorable heroine of the same name. Even before Shakespeare, English poet Edmund Spenser used the name in his 1579 volume of contemporary poetry called “Shepheardes Calender” which follows an unrequited love story between Colin and Rosalind. Rosalind has also been ascribed the folk etymology “lovely rose” or “pretty rose” from the Latin phrase “rosa linda”. Rosalind eventually morphed into names like Rosaline, Rosalyn and Roselyn.

Popularity of the Name Roselyn

Roselyn was in circulation in America for the 40 years between 1913 and 1953. During that period of time, she was never a top choice or a fan favorite. The name pretty much averaged around position #770 on the charts (which means very few early century baby girls were named Roselyn). Back then, names like Rose, Rosemary, Rosa, Rosie and Rosalie all had her beat. In 1954 Roselyn finally succumbed to obscurity when she dropped off the Top 1000 list altogether. Her hibernation from usage would last about 50 years. The name just returned to the charts in 2003 and saw a healthy push in 2004. Why? We wondered. Puerto Rican actress Roselyn Sánchez hit the Hollywood scene alongside Jackie Chan in the hit action film “Rush Hour 2” (2001) and then immediately attracted the notice of Maxim and FHM men’s magazines (on their “Hot 100” and “Sexiest Women” lists). Sánchez’s influence on her name’s usage would only be brief and modest, but this doesn’t detract from the fact that Roselyn is still a “pretty rose” and a gorgeously “gentle” sounding name.
