Etymology & Historical Origin - Royce
Royce is the transferred use of an English surname, a variant of Royse (meaning “rose”) which was a medieval sobriquet for a person with rosy cheeks. The surname could have also developed as a topographical surname identifying a person who dwelled near a place where roses grew. The first recorded spelling of the surname was “Rose” in the early 14th century. In 1904 an Englishman by the name of Henry Royce partnered up with Charles Rolls and introduced their first Rolls-Royce automobile which added an element of high quality luxury to the name. Today when most people hear the name Royce, they think of the expensive car manufacturer. Like Bentley and Mercedes (names which are also given to children today), Royce represents the pinnacle of extravagance and expensive taste. Therefore, the name Royce will always belong to the jet-set, or at least those striving for it.
Popularity of the Name Royce
Royce has existed on the American male naming charts since the late 19th century. It has never been a particularly popular name but it did manage to hit the Top 300 list in the late 1930s. Afterwards, Royce began to slowly fall from favor until the name completely disappeared from the charts in 2001. His hiatus would be brief, however, as Royce reemerged on the charts in 2005 and has show marked improvements in a few short years. What’s the sudden fuss over Royce, we wondered? We think the name’s increased usage in 2010 and 2011 can be attributed to the recent success of Dominican-American singer Prince Royce (b. Geoffrey Royce Rojas). In this case, Hispanic-Americans may now be the driving force behind the rising usage of the name Royce. Whether you associate the name with the fancy car or the Latin-tropical-song singing Prince Royce, we will forever think of a “rosy cheeked” baby boy.
