Etymology & Historical Origin - Rubi

Rubí is the Spanish form of Ruby, taken from the gemstone of the same name, which is derived from the Medieval Latin word “rubeus” meaning “red” Actually, the English added “ruby” to their vocabulary from the Old French “rubi”). The ruby comes from the same mineral (corundum) as the sapphire; it is also considered more valuable the more red in color it appears and the more transparent in clarity. The ruby is also thought to store heat, and is said to attract abundance in material and spiritual wealth. It’s the gemstone of prosperousness. As a given name, Ruby became popularized among English-speakers in the 19th century when some gemstone names became fashionable (Pearl, Opal, Ruby). Ruby is definitely experiencing a revival right now in the 21st century. Less so, though, among Spanish speakers.

Popularity of the Name Rubi

Rubí debuted on America’s female naming charts between 1990 and 1993, but it was so rarely used, the name could hardly hang onto the Top 1000 list. It wasn’t until 2004 when the name would resurface, and this time it preformed quite a bit better. Among Hispanic-Americans, Rubí was less influenced by the growing popularity of Ruby then it was by a popular telenovela called “Rubí” which aired on Univision between 2004 and 2005 (one of the network’s most-watched telenovelas of all time) about a beautiful but manipulative woman named Rubí. As a result of the show’s popularity among Mexican-Americans, the name Rubí had her best year ever at position #432 in 2005. Unfortunately, and despite increased interest in the name Ruby, 2010 marks the last year the Spanish version of Rubí can be found on America’s Top 1000 list.
