Etymology & Historical Origin - Russell

Russell is the transferred use of a common English surname which itself was originally rooted in an old French nickname “rousel” meaning ‘little red one’ (from the Latin “russus”). The nickname was most likely given to people with red hair. The French Normans introduced the name to the English after the Conquest of 1066 where it took hold as a popular and noble surname. Eventually Russell became a masculine given name throughout the English-speaking world since at least the 19th century.

Popularity of the Name Russell

Russell has always maintained a spot on the American male naming charts since the U.S. government first began tracking naming trends in 1880. In fact, back at the end of the 19th century, Russell was a pretty familiar first name in the United States. The name ascended onto the Top 100 list of most favored boy names in 1889 and would hold a position on that list for 94 consecutive years until finally falling off in 1983. Russell is a name with greater success and longer endurance on the American popularity charts than we would have guessed. Its usage and appeal has remained relatively constant until the 1990s. Now that we’ve crossed the threshold into a new century, Russell has decided not to come along for the ride. Apparently, this name is no longer on the American parents’ radar. Russell is now underrated and under used. It reminds us of a silly elementary joke: What did the two leaves name their child? Russell. Just as ‘rustling’ leaves has a nice sound to it, so does this name. It’s manly yet gentle; classic yet modern; sophisticated yet feisty. It’s obviously a cute choice for a red-headed baby boy, too! Even though Russell is considered outdated by today’s naming practices, it’s still a risk-free choice.
