Etymology & Historical Origin - Ryder
The name Ryder is a transferred use of a surname with Anglo-Saxon origins and comes from an occupational name. The Olde English word “ridere” means ‘to ride’ and signified a horse-mounted warrior or messenger, a term used in pre-7th century England. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, however, this occupational name came to be known more commonly as a “Knight” (for those serving his lord as a mounted soldier). Another etymological source of the surname comes from a topographical name (from the Olde English “ried, ryd” meaning ‘clearing in a wood’) and denoted a person living near such a place. Topographical surname origins were some of the earliest used since landscape features were easily distinguishable and gave an identity to those living near or around such places (wood clearings, river valleys, etc.). Although Ryder dates back to the development of surnames in England in the 11th century, as a given name Ryder did not come into use until very recently, mostly in the United States.
Popularity of the Name Ryder
While Ryder has English origins as a surname, we consider the forename very American. Ryder was not adopted as a male given name until 1994 and really just languished on the charts for about 10 years. It’s not until 2002 through 2005 that the name starts to show real promise. It jumps 600 positions on the popularity charts in four short years! The biggest jump in the name’s usage (over 300 places on the charts) came in one year alone, 2004. In January of that year, the ever-popular young actress Kate Hudson gave birth to a son she named Ryder Russell Robinson. Clearly, this had a substantial influence on the name’s increased popularity that year. The name has maintained its upward trajectory today and is now dancing close to the Top 100 list of most-favored boy’s names. Not surprisingly, the name Ryder is most popular in the western United States (spatial states like Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, for instance) where the horses roam free calling out for their little “Ryders”.
