Etymology & Historical Origin - Skye

The female name Skye is an elaboration of the English vocabulary word “sky” signifying the uncertain distance high above us or the topmost limit. The sky is where we look to find the sun and moon, the stars and the heavens, and perhaps the dwelling place of the image known as “God”. In daytime, the sky is blue because the air scatters blue sunlight more than it scatters red. At night, with the disappearance of the sun, the sky is dark except for the appearance of stars and moonlight. The English word is actually borrowed from the Old Norse “ský” meaning ‘cloud’, the visible mass of water particles which both obscure and define the elusive sky. The name could also be used in homage to the Isle of Skye, located in the Inner Hebrides of northern Scotland, perhaps called Skýey by the Scandinavian settlers and Viking invaders (Isle of the Clouds). As a nature name, Sky/Skye could be considered a “hippie” throwback like River or Rainbow. Skye is currently Top 50 favorite girl’s name in Scotland, and it’s on the Top 100 in the countries of England, Wales and Australia.

Popularity of the Name Skye

Surprisingly, Skye only dates back to 1987 on the American female naming charts. We guess there weren’t enough flower-children in the 1960s using this moniker on their daughters to achieve a spot on the Top 1000. The name’s sudden usage in the late 80s was actually influenced by Skye Chandler Quartermaine, a soap opera character on All My Children who first appeared in 1986. Naming children after daytime characters was a popular trend in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Today, however, Skye is making a home for herself on the charts despite the fact that daytime dramas are almost passé. Skye’s peak popularity came in 2004 when it hit #400 on the charts. Today, the name is in decline, albeit slowly. Apparently Skye has shown us her limits. This name is uncommon and likely used by nonconformist or nature-loving parents today (rather than bon-bon eating, soap-opera watching fantasy parents of the past). Don’t be deceived, this little one syllable name packs a lot of punch. It’s strong and confident, yet bright and friendly. Skye gives us a sense of beauty and being. It’s a lovely notion that one would choose a name of such powerful simplicity.
