Etymology & Historical Origin - Skylar

Skylar originated from the Dutch surname Schuyler which means ‘scholar, school teacher.’ The name was brought to America by way of Dutch settlers in New York in the 17th century. A notable name bearer Philip Schuyler became a U.S. senator from the state of New York in the late 18th century after distinguishing himself as a Revolutionary War hero. Schuyler was the first form of the name to be used as a male given name influenced by this early important American figure. The names Skylar and Skyler are simpler phonetic renderings of the name Schuyler that became popular in the United States in the late 20th century. Once a favorite choice for boys, Skylar is now a preferred name for little girls.

Popularity of the Name Skylar

Skylar is a unisex name in America. It started out as a boys’ name, debuting on the charts in 1981. By 1990, Skylar entered the charts as a girls’ name. In 1995, the girl’s name overtook boys in popularity and today it’s vastly more popular for females. They like this name in the South for little girls where it’s a Top 100 pick in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. Nationwide, however, the name appears to be waning. The peak of its popularity came in 1999 when it reached position #131 on the female charts. Peak popularity for boys came in 1998 when it reached low-height of #398 on the male charts. Usage as a boy’s name seems to be falling apart as it becomes more popular for girls. American parents don’t mind masculine names for girls, but they really don’t like feminine names for their little boys. As Skylar and Skye become more and more distinctly female, the usage for little boys seems to show a corresponding disinterest in the name. In any case, as such a ‘scholarly’ name, we think it’s befitting for any child. But we do suggest the original Schuyler spelling for little boys.
