Etymology & Historical Origin - Tanner

The name Tanner originated as an English surname which came from an occupational name. The Olde English word “tannere” was used to signify a person employed as a tanner of animal skins to produce leather for necessary everyday items (shoes, horse harnesses, saddles and armor) during medieval times and before. The word was probably influenced by the ancient Celtic word for the oak tree whose bark was used in the tanning process. The surname first appears as “Tannur” in the 12th century.

Popularity of the Name Tanner

In the United States Tanner came into usage as a male given name for the first time in 1976. It took the name only 17 years to reach a spot on the Top 100 list of most commonly used boys’ names. Tanner was a Top 100 favorite for only eight years (during the 1990s). At the turn of the 21st century the name has been consistently showing backwards movement on the charts. At this trajectory, we expect Tanner to fall off the Top 200 list sometime in the next few years. The trend to use last names as given names is still going strong in America, but Tanner is no longer one of the more popular ones. Nevertheless, Tanner is still a Top 100 favorite in the states of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Vermont. Like leather itself, the name Tanner suggests a certain amount of strength and ruggedness.
