Etymology & Historical Origin - Tiara

A tiara is a crown or headdress with a semicircular shape, usually bejeweled, and most commonly associated with members of the royalty (although in more modern times they have become symbolic of beauty pageants). The English adopted the word from the Greek (τιάρα) in the early 16th century, but it ultimately came from the Old Persian language (tiyārā) indicating “headdress of the Persian kings”. In the ancient Middle East, a tiara was actually worn by men, emperors and kings specifically, and looked quite different than how we would picture a tiara today (more of a cone shaped crown). What’s referred to as a “papal tiara” is the crown worn by popes. As a female given name, Tiara came into circulation in the early 1980s. It’s a name most distinct to the United States and doesn’t appear to be used within other English-speaking nations.

Popularity of the Name Tiara

Tiara first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1981 and by 1988 she had already reached her peak popularity at position #216. The name performed impressively well on the charts between the late 1980s on up through the late 1990s. However, as we turned into the 21st century, Tiara’s days became numbered. Her descent from the Top 1000 list happened as quickly as her initial ascent. In fact, Tiara is so rarely used today that the name fell off America’s Top 1000 altogether in 2010.
