Etymology & Historical Origin - Trey
Trey comes from the Old French vocabulary word “treis” and the Latin “tres” meaning ‘the three’. It usually signifies the three in any suit of playing cards. It may be given to the third son born into a family. Trey probably started out as a nickname in England, but eventually became a masculine given name, used mainly in the United States. The modern French word “tres” (pronounced the same way as Trey) means ‘very’.
Popularity of the Name Trey
The name Trey first appeared on the U.S. naming charts in 1964. The name has very modern roots as a given name. Trey climbed slowly and methodically up the American naming charts for over 30 years, and reached its peak popularity at the end of the century in 1999. It has never experienced more than semi-high moderate usage. As we’ve entered the 21st century, the name Trey appears to be on the downswing. It is now given to barely 1,000 baby boys a year. However, the state of South Dakota is still on board – they rank Trey on their Top 100 list of most favored boy names. It’s a cute name to give your third son, or a boy inside of triplets. It has also been a name of choice among African-Americans. It’s simple, one-syllable and unpretentious. There’s just something about this name that is…shall we say…Trey-cool?
