Etymology & Historical Origin - Tyree
Tyree is an example of an African-American name invention from the popular “Tyr” name suffix (e.g., Tyrone, Tyrese, Tyrell). Because Tyree is essentially a made up name there is no known meaning or etymology. It’s just distinctly different and celebrated within the Black communities of the United States as original and unique. This name does not appear to be used outside of America.
Popularity of the Name Tyree
Tyree had one appearance on the charts in 1905. Kind of random, we know, and the name barely made it onto the charts that year. For all intents and purposes, Tyree did not make his real debut on the charts until 70 years later in 1974. The 70s marked a time when African-Americans began to form their own naming styles as a way of recapturing their oppressed identities following the Civil Rights Movement. Certain naming trends became apparent by the mid-1970s within the Black culture. For one, names from Africa and Muslim-Arabic names began to circulate within the African-American communities. Another powerful naming practice was the outright invention of brand new names. Tyree is an example of this naming practice. Tyree actually became moderately successful in the late 1990s – his best year ever on the charts was at position #405 in 1998. This is actually a high ranking for a name that is pretty much restricted to Black-Americans. However, Tyree has really dropped from fashion since the turn of the 21st century. Today the name is barely holding onto the Top 1000 list and is dangerously close to falling off the radar permanently. It’s hard not to like the name Tyree – it’s upbeat and positive sounding with a certain youthfully energetic quality.
