Etymology & Historical Origin - Tyrell

Tyrell is a masculine name made popular by African-Americans in the United States. It’s actually the transferred use of a surname most common in Ireland. It’s believed to be derived from the Old French “tirel” from the verb “tirer” meaning “to pull’. Tirel was used as a sobriquet of sorts for an obstinate horse or animal who pulled on the reins, and so it developed as a nickname for a stubborn person. The English variant of this surname is Terrell which was notably born by Mary Church Terrell (1863-1954), an early African-American civil rights activist and one of the first Black women to earn a college degree. African-Americans may be paying her homage when they name their sons Terrell or Tyrell.

Popularity of the Name Tyrell

Tyrell first appeared on the male naming charts in 1979 and quickly became a fashionable favorite for African-American baby boys during the 1980s and 90s. This is not a name exclusive to African-Americans, however, because we have noted some cross-over appeal. For instance, Tyrell was a Top 100 favorite boy’s name in the state of Wyoming in 1986; a state with a Black population of less than 1%. Since we’ve crossed the threshold into the 21st century Tyrell hasn’t been faring as well. The name has dropped about 450 positions on the charts just since the year 2000 and now he’s dangerously close to disappearing altogether. Obviously Tyrell is no longer on the American radar, but we sure hope this “stubborn” little rascal doesn’t leave us. The name is quaintly charming with its rather playful etymology. A fun choice for a boy born under the “stubborn” signs of Aries or Taurus.
