Etymology & Historical Origin - Valentina

Valentina is the Latinate feminine version of the name Valentinus, derived from “valens” meaning ‘healthy, strong.’ The most famous bearer of the name is St. Valentine whose feast day is, you guessed it, February 14th. In truth, not much is known about this 3rd century saint, but his cult grew extensively in the later Middle Ages as a martyr who was beheaded during the persecutions of Roman Emperor Claudius II for overseeing the marriage of Christian couples, and also for (gasp) having the audacity to attempt to convert the Emperor himself to Christianity. As the patron saint of love, young people and happy marriages, Valentine is most associated with romantic love. The female name Valentina currently ranks high in Italy, Spain, Catalonia and South America. It is also ranked among Slavic nations, in particular, Russia.

Popularity of the Name Valentina

Valentina is a new entrant on the U.S. popularity charts of most commonly used girl’s names, first appearing in 1994. The name advanced over 500 positions on the charts in eight short years, between 1996 and 2003. The next significant jump in the name’s popularity comes in 2007 and 2008, influenced by Selma Hayek who gave birth to a daughter in September 2007 whom she named Valentina. The name has yet to achieve a spot on the Top 100 list of most favored girls’ names but it sure appears to be headed in that direction. It’s particularly popular in the state of Florida where Valentina is a Top 50 choice. It’s also in the Top 100 in the states of New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York and California – and also Arizona and Texas. Valentina is a four-syllable name which gives it a certain poetic and lyrical quality. It’s full of love, beauty and romance, but also strength and valor as the etymology suggests. Valentina is an absolutely gorgeous name!
