Characteristics of Valeria
Etymology & Historical Origin - Valeria
Valeria is from the Latin word “valere” which means ‘to be healthy, strong.’ Valeria is the feminine form of Valerius, which is a Roman surname from Antiquity. The name was popularized in the Middle Ages (particularly in France) in homage to a 3rd century saint who was beheaded for her Christian beliefs and said to have carried her own head back to her confessor, the bishop Saint Martial, who had converted her. The French form of the female name is “Valerie” and the masculine form is “Valery.” Valeria is used mainly by Spanish-speaking people. In Spain, the name ranks in the Top 50.
Popularity of the Name Valeria
In America, Valeria has maintained a position on the popularity charts for at least 120 years; however, the usage had been moderate to very low. In the early 1990’s, the name began its slow and steady ascent into the Top 100 which it reached in 2007. Valeria’s growing popularity is probably owed to the increase in America’s Latino and Spanish-speaking population, which rose 43% between 2000 and 2010 alone. This has had the single greatest impact on the current upward trend in usage of names that are distinctly Spanish. Valeria fits into this category.

Valeria (Coriolanus) Valeria is a minor character in Shakespeare’s tragedy “Coriolanus.” She is a virtuous noblewoman, a friend of Volumina and Virgilia, the title character’s mother and wife. She seems to serve mainly as a second counterpoint, along with the gentle Virgilia, to the self-serving and unscrupulous Volumina, who has raised Coriolanus to be the same.
Valeria (Lolita) Valeria is the first wife of Humbert Humbert in Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita,” whom he marries early in a failed attempt to keep his baser instincts for young girls at bay. Indeed, her main attraction for him is her girlishness, although he considers her stupid and fat. She has the last word, so to speak, when she confesses to an adulterous affair, packs her bags and leaves him for her lover. He considers murdering or otherwise harming her, but does nothing. Later he hears that she has died in childbirth.
