Etymology & Historical Origin - Vance
Vance is the transferred use of an English surname with Anglo-Saxon roots and originating as a topographical feature. It comes from the Olde English “fenn” indicating a “marsh, fen” (a fen is an inland, low-lying marshland containing nutrient rich soil). The surname would have signified a person dwelling near a marsh area. In earlier English dialects, the “f” and “v” sounds were interchangeable which is how Fenn eventually morphed into Vance. The first recorded spelling of the surname was rendered as “del Fan” in the late 12th century. Today several surnames are derived from Fenn such as Fann, Van(n)(s), Venn and Vance. As a given name, it may have been popularized in England in the 19th century due to the fame of “The Great Vance” (Alfred Vance), an actor, singer and pantomime who toured the music halls of London.
Popularity of the Name Vance
We were surprised to learn that Vance dates back to the late 19th century in America. But we weren’t surprised to see that the name has never achieved anything beyond mild to low usage. This is just not a name you hear too often. He did managed to show moderate success in the 1960s but other than that, Vance is pretty uncommon. The name is reminiscent of Lance and Chance; a one-syllable simple name. Vance does have a stronger more masculine sound to it than Lance or Chance, but it also lacks a little pizzazz. Will you take a chance on Vance? Is he too Fancy Pantsy Vancey? Perhaps it’s us who are missing the point. Vance is so understated, underused and underwater (think: marsh) that he just might be the coolest kid on the block. It’s one of those names we picture on a country music star. Sort of like Garth.
