Characteristics of Waylon
Etymology & Historical Origin - Waylon
Waylon is a name that’s taken a circuitous route before arriving at our front door. It all started with a Germanic name “Wieland” from the elements “wela” (‘skill’) and “land” (‘land’). The English adopted the name probably from early Scandinavian settlers and eventually anglicized it to Wēland in Olde English and then Wayland. Wayland was the original birth name given to country musician Waylon Jennings. His mother basically made up Waylon by slightly altering Wayland so his name wouldn’t be associated with a nearby Baptist college she hadn’t known about. Mrs. Jennings inadvertently gave the English-speaking population a new name. Waylon Jennings himself thought his name sounded too backwoods or “hillbilly” as he put it, but admitted it had come to grow on him. In Norse Mythology, Wayland the Smith (Völundr in Old Norse) was a master blacksmith with unsurpassed skill who purportedly shaped the swords of many victorious warriors. Waylon is a name that is used almost exclusively in the United States.
Popularity of the Name Waylon
Waylon made his debut on the U.S. male naming charts in 1968. Not coincidentally, in 1967 Waylon Jennings released his first hit single “Just to Satisfy You”. While the name Waylon wasn’t an instant success on the charts, it did seem to grow along with the country music star’s rising career. The height of the name’s popularity was in 1980. By the late 80s, people started to forget about this name and for most of the 1990s it would come and go off the charts (meaning usage was almost extinct). Then suddenly Waylon stepped back up to the mike again in 2002 (the year Mr. Jennings died of complications from diabetes). It became a tribute of sorts for some fans and parents to use this name on their sons. Now that we’re deeper into the 21st century, it looks like Waylon is a name here to stay. The Texas-born country musician gave the name a rugged, country and western quality which probably appeals to parents outside of his fan base. It’s a cool, original name, but people will usually connect it with Waylon Jennings (so that has to not bother you). And why would it? Waylon Jennings was a ‘skillful’ musician; with a name like Waylon perhaps your son will find his own ‘skill’ so that he may thrive and prosper as well.
