Etymology & Historical Origin - Wrestling

Wrestling Brewster was only six years old when he made the voyage to Cape Cod from Plymouth, England on the Mayflower in 1620. He was accompanied by his parents, William and Mary Brewster, and his older brother Love (his brother Jonathan and sisters Patience and Fear were left behind in England until they could follow a couple years later). William and Mary’s oldest child, Jonathan, is pretty much the only one given a normal name. These enthusiastic Puritans followed that up with Patience, Fear, Love and Wrestling. Wait, Wrestling? Yah, that’s what we thought at first, too. But when we thought about it, it started to make sense. We already knew the Puritans were known for their whacky naming styles. Wrestling is simply a reference to Genesis 32 wherein Jacob “wrestles” with either an angel of God or God Himself (on that point the Bible isn’t entirely clear). In any case, the famous Biblical wrestling scene supposedly symbolizes a lesson in humility for Jacob. It serves to demonstrate his insignificance up against God (and, in our humble opinion, it also serves to demonstrate the size of Jacob’s Kahuna’s). In Olde English, the word “wræstlung” essentially described the sport of two men pulling, twisting and throwing each other. To “wrest” means to “twist, wrench, bend”. Old Wrestling Brewster died unmarried before the age of 30, so there was no Wrestling, Jr. to follow. At least not that we know of.

Popularity of the Name Wrestling

It’s safe to say that Wrestling Brewster is one of the few, if only, boys ever named Wrestling in the history of America. Due to the fact that he was a Mayflower passenger means that Wrestling was one of the first European names to land on American soil. For that reason alone we thought it was worth adding to our database. We also don’t think he got it as bad as his sister, Fear Brewster.
