Etymology & Historical Origin - Zane

There are three potential meanings for the masculine name Zane. For one, Zain and Zayn are transcriptions of the Arabic زين which means “grace, beauty”. Zayin, Zain and Zayn are all transcriptions for the seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet (as well as other Semitic languages such as Aramaic and Phoenician). In fact, the Greeks took this letter from the Phoenicians for their own letter Zeta (Z). From this perspective Zayin or Zain means “seventh” in Hebrew. Lastly, Zane is merely a surname-turned-first-name borne by author Zane Grey (b. Pearl Zane Grey, Zane being his mother’s maiden name). The origin of this surname is unknown. Zane’s entrance onto the popularity graphs in the United States (1921) coincides with the fame of American author Zane Grey (1872-1939) whose works idealized the Old West.
