Etymology & Historical Origin - Zariah

Zariah is an elaboration of Zaria, generally believed to be a mutation of the Arabic female given name “Zahrah” (زهرة ) which means ‘blooming flower’. Zaria is also the name of a major city in Northern Nigeria, Africa. Alternately, Zaria is associated with Slavic mythology as the beautiful goddess of the dawn. In fact, Zaria or Zarya (Russian: заря) is the Russian word for "sunrise, dawn”. She was known as the morning star and heavenly bride to her ancient worshippers who greeted her at dawn. The names Zaria and Zariah are most common in the United States, and especially popular among African-Americans.

Popularity of the Name Zariah

Zariah first appeared on the American female naming charts in 2004, following Zaria which debuted earlier in 1996. While Zariah is not exactly overused, it has managed to pass the original Zaria spelling in popularity. Some parents like to add the “-h” to the end of some names to jazz it up a bit. As Zaria and Zariah became more popular in the past decade, the name Zariyah was recently introduced as a new and modified respelling. These Zaria names are mostly popular among African-Americans and are therefore only used moderately. The “Z” gives this name a unique stamp and distinctive sound. It’s pretty but not flashy. And the two potential meanings: 1) blooming flower; or 2) sunrise, morning star – have their own understated beauty.
