Etymology & Historical Origin - Zephyr

Zephyros (Ζεφυρος) is an ancient Greek word for “west wind” and, apropos, it’s also the name of the Greek god of the west wind. In Western tradition, the west wind is considered the gentlest or mildest of wind directions (blowing from the west in an eastward direction). When the warm west winds came, spring was near, so Zephyr was often depicted as the messenger of spring (his wind brought rains that awakened the plant life). Varying tales survive surrounding Zephyr’s place in Greek mythology, but perhaps the one most retold is that of his love for the Spartan prince Hyacinth (although Apollo had designs on the boy himself). When Zephyr saw Hyacinth and Apollo together sporting around with a discus, he jealously blew his wind causing the discus to strike Hyacinth in the head, thus killing him. Apollo made the hyacinth flower from his blood. Zephyr was also known as the brother-husband of several of his sisters: Iris (goddess of the rainbow), Chloris (goddess of flowers) and Podarge, a harpie (half bird/half female creature) with whom he sired Balios and Xanthos, the immortal horses given to Achilles during the Trojan War. As a given name, Zephyr is considered gender-neutral, although it’s far more popular for boys. Overall, though, Zephyr is a very rare name.

Popularity of the Name Zephyr

Zephyr has never been used with enough frequency to land a position on America’s Top 1000 list of names for either gender. Case in point, Zephyr was given to a total of 60 baby boys in 2012 and 20 baby girls. Indeed, we are talking about a very uncommon name here. There are three very good reasons to like this name, however. One, it’s meaning (west wind) is calm and reassuring. Two, its ancient roots in Greek mythology add dimension and interest. And three, it’s a “Z” name – which is unusual and therefore unique.

The Wreck of the Zephyr (Chris Van Allsburg) - At the edge of a cliff lies the wreck of a small sailboat. How did it get there? "Waves carried it up in a storm," says an old sailor. But is it possible that waves could ever get that high? There is another story -- the story of a boy and his obsessive desire to be the greatest sailor, the story of a storm that carried the boy and his boat to a place where boats glide like gulls high above the water and not upon it. Chris Van Allsburg tells that story of the boy and his boat, the Zephyr, in words and haunting, full-color pastel paintings. His sailboats sail the night sky with the stars in pictures so vivid that the reader can almost hear the wind in the sails. Here is a work of unusual artistry that will enchant readers of all ages for many years to come. Recommended for ages 4-8.

But when Gramma, Daddy, and Mom are too busy to play airplane with her, Zephyr’s excess enthusiasm gets her sent to her room — where she discovers a secret door that leads to the most wondrous place she’s ever seen! Lovers of flying machines and gadgets, along with adventurers of all kinds, will be buoyed by this lighthearted tale of a little girl who finds her wings. Recommended for ages 4-8.
