Biblical Names

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. These are a few of my favorite things. Ok, so we know. You’re not going to name your daughters “crisp apple strudels” and your sons “schnitzel with noodles” – but parents are increasingly using vocabulary words when selecting names for their children. And this goes well beyond the old-fashioned virtue names (Hope, Faith & Charity) or musically inspired vocabulary words (Cadence, Melody & Harmony). Parents are more creative than ever in terms of their word selection for names.

The list of “favorite things” names for girls is a bit lengthier. For instance, we have names of the months and seasons (June, April, Autumn). We also have colors (Scarlett, Olive, Violet) and gem stones (Pearl, Ruby, Amber). There are many flower names (Lily, Daisy, Jasmine) or names of plants and trees (Holly, Ivy, Hazel). There are concept names (Destiny, Journey, Karma) and there are heavenly names (Celeste, Eden, Luna).  For boy names, the list is much sportier. There are hobby like names (Archer, Fisher, Hunter) and there are motorized names (Bentley, Royce, Harley). Parents tend toward names that suggest power and strength for their boys like Colt, Talon, Slade. Below is a list we pulled together of some word names conjure up pretty specific images given the specificity of their definitions. Are some of these things on your “favorites” list?
